EV charging in Paya Lebar and Geylang: where it is cheapest, and where the public chargers are

The cheapest public charge in the Paya Lebar and Geylang stretch is not at the malls.

It is in the Ubi industrial estate, where the Vertex Building runs chargers at S$0.50 per kWh, slow and fast alike, and a nearby industrial unit edges a cent lower.

A few streets away, at the Paya Lebar Quarter malls, the same electricity costs S$0.77 on a slow charger and S$0.86 on a fast one.

The cheap power, and the cheap fast power, sits in the back-lots of Ubi, Kaki Bukit and Macpherson, among the courier depots and motor workshops. The malls and the Sports Hub are the dear, convenient option.

For the electric vehicle (EV) driver who cannot charge at home, here is where the public power is in Geylang, Paya Lebar and the estates around them, and what it costs.

The cheapest charge: the industrial estates

The lowest rates in the area are at the industrial buildings of Ubi and Kaki Bukit, where the chargers are aimed at the workday traffic of vans and fleet cars and sit largely idle in the evening.

The Vertex Building on Ubi Avenue 3 is the one most drivers can use without a second thought, with Novowatt running both 22kW alternating-current chargers and a 120kW fast charger at a flat S$0.50 per kWh.

A fast charge there costs the same as a slow one, and less than almost anything at a mall.

The cheapest of all is UB.One, also on Ubi Avenue 4, where an iWow charger runs from S$0.49, while the Aljunied Industrial Complex and the Hor Kew Business Centre near Kallang Pudding sit at S$0.51 and S$0.54.

These are working carparks, busiest in office hours and usually open by evening, so they suit a driver passing through more than one hunting a guaranteed bay.

For a charge most drivers will actually plan around, Charge+ is the widest cheap network, at S$0.63 per kWh across a string of Geylang and Boon Keng blocks, the lowest rate at any housing block in the area.

On a 40kWh top-up, the S$0.50 charger works out to about S$20, against roughly S$25 at a block charger and S$34 at the dearest mall fast charger.

Charging overnight: the Kampong Ubi, Eunos, Dakota and Macpherson blocks

For the residents who depend on a public charger, the housing blocks are the overnight default. But across most of Geylang and Paya Lebar, a late arrival still finds a socket.

The squeeze is in the older estates, where the block carparks carry only three sockets each and fill through the evening as residents come home.

Blk 355 Ubi Road 3, at Ubi Grove, is the tightest. Its three Strides YTL sockets, at S$0.68, are usually all taken by about 7pm on a weeknight, so a resident who wants one should be home by then. It is no easier at the weekend, when it fills by about 9pm.

When it is full, the next blocks along at Blk 342 to 352 Ubi Avenue 1 run the same Strides YTL sockets at S$0.68 and are taken only about a fifth of the night, so one is almost always open.

Over in Eunos, Blk 39 Eunos Road 2, at Eunos Court, fills by about 9pm on a weeknight, and is much the same on a Saturday. The quiet fallback there is Blk 5 to 11 Eunos Crescent, where SP Mobility runs sockets at S$0.68 that are open almost every night.

Blk 91 Jalan Satu, at Dakota Breeze, fills by about 8pm on a weeknight but stays easier at the weekend, with a socket usually open late. Blk 58 Dakota Crescent nearby, also Strides YTL at S$0.68, is the quieter alternative.

In Macpherson, Blk 17 Circuit Road is the one to plan around, full by about 9pm on a weeknight, though it stays open later at the weekend. The rest of the Circuit Road and Pipit Road blocks, at the same S$0.68 to S$0.70, usually keep a socket open late.

The cheapest blocks, the Charge+ chargers at S$0.63 around Lorong 3 Geylang and Upper Boon Keng, sit away from this squeeze and usually keep a socket into the evening.

None of this is worth guessing at from the road. The revolt.sg charger map shows which block has an open socket right now.

When speed matters

The cheapest fast chargers are in the industrial estates. The dearest are at the malls.

The standout is the Vertex Building again, where the 120kW Novowatt charger runs at S$0.50 per kWh, about as cheap as fast charging gets anywhere in Singapore.

The Network Courier Building in Kaki Bukit runs a 100kW EV Mobility charger at S$0.60, and UB.One a 60kW one at S$0.52.

For a driver who wants a fast charge near Paya Lebar Quarter rather than out in Ubi, the Charge+ chargers at Paya Lebar 178 and at the Axxel Innovation Centre run at about S$0.73 per kWh on 120kW units, and usually have an open port in the evening.

But the malls are the expensive way to charge fast. SP Mobility runs the 50kW to 100kW chargers at PLQ Mall, Paya Lebar Square and Kallang Wave Mall at S$0.86 per kWh, the dearest fast charge at any mall here.

The Shell station on Macpherson Road has the quickest charger of all, a 190kW unit, but at S$0.89 per kWh it is also the dearest.

The malls and the Sports Hub

For a driver already parked at a mall or at the stadium, the rates are much the same across them, and all sit at the top of the range.

PLQ Mall and Paya Lebar Square, both on Paya Lebar Road, run SP Mobility chargers at S$0.77 per kWh on alternating current and S$0.86 on the fast chargers.

Kallang Wave Mall and the OCBC Aquatic Centre at the Singapore Sports Hub charge the same S$0.77, handy for a top-up during a match or a swim rather than as a cheap fill.

None of these is the cheap way to charge, and they make sense mainly for a driver already there for the shops or the pool.

Paying for it

There is no single tap-and-go card across the networks, so the app matters.

Novowatt and iWow run the cheapest chargers, at the Ubi industrial buildings, each on its own app. Charge+ covers the cheapest housing blocks, in Geylang and Boon Keng, and a row of fast chargers at S$0.73.

Strides YTL, SP Mobility and ComfortDelGro ENGIE run most of the HDB block chargers between them, and SP Mobility also runs the malls and the Sports Hub.

So the practical move is to set up the app for whichever charger is the regular one before the first visit, because most of these units will not start without it.

The public chargers in the area with a published rate are below, cheapest first, grouped by operator and rate. Private and tenant-only bays are left out, the housing blocks are grouped by operator, and chargers that report no rate are not listed.

The upshot

For a driver in Paya Lebar and Geylang, the cheap power is in the industrial back-lots, not the malls.

The cheapest everyday charge is the Vertex Building in Ubi at S$0.50 per kWh, on both its slow and its fast chargers, and the dearest is the run of malls and petrol stations at S$0.86 to S$0.89.

For an overnight charge at a housing block, the Charge+ blocks in Geylang and Boon Keng are the cheapest, at S$0.63.

Overnight, the pocket to plan around is Kampong Ubi, Eunos and Macpherson, where the three-socket blocks fill through the evening. At the tightest, Blk 355 Ubi Road 3, a resident should plug in by about 7pm on a weeknight, or use Blk 342 to 352 Ubi Avenue 1 nearby, at the same rate, which stays open.
