Chinese electric vehicle brand NIO has opened its first dedicated Singapore showroom, with Wearnes Automotive officially launching the NIO Space at 28 Leng Kee Road on March 14. The opening marks a significant step in NIO's Southeast Asian expansion — Singapore becomes the brand's first right-hand-drive market in the region. The compact Firefly hatchback, which made its right-hand-drive global debut at the Singapore Motor Show in January, is now available for customers to view and configure at the new space.

A Premium Compact for the Category A Market

The Firefly is a five-door, fully electric hatchback designed to occupy the premium compact segment — a space currently held by the electric MINI Cooper and Smart #1. At 4,003mm in length, it is smaller than most electric crossovers but targets buyers who want European-style urban refinement with Chinese-brand technology.

Powering the Firefly is a single rear-mounted motor producing 105 kW, which places it firmly in the Certificate of Entitlement Category A bracket — meaning buyers access the lower-priced COE tier compared to more powerful Category B vehicles. The 42 kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery delivers a WLTP-rated range of 320 to 330 km, with DC fast charging at up to 100 kW capable of adding 10% to 80% charge in approximately 29 minutes. The car is compatible with Singapore's public fast-charging infrastructure from SP Group, Shell Recharge, and Charge+.

The Firefly earned a five-star Euro NCAP rating with a 96% Adult Occupant Protection score. Practical packaging includes a 92-litre front trunk alongside a 404-litre boot that expands to 1,253 litres with the rear seats folded.

Wearnes Automotive Takes the Wheel

Wearnes Automotive, the established multi-brand dealer group with experience across premium European and Asian marques, has been appointed NIO's exclusive local distributor. The company's CEO, Andre Roy, framed the partnership as a long-term commitment rather than a short-term market play.

"While many EV brands have entered markets hoping that things will simply fall into place, NIO's approach is fundamentally different," Roy said. "They are methodical, long-term oriented and focused on doing things the right way — from the product to the infrastructure, to the entire ownership journey."

NIO's founder and CEO, William Li, added: "After a decade of development, NIO is ready to serve a broader global user base. Partnering with industry veterans like Wearnes Automotive will enable us to introduce smart electric vehicles to new markets more efficiently."

Wearnes has confirmed that additional right-hand-drive NIO models will follow the Firefly, with SUV and saloon body styles identified as priorities given local buyer preferences.

Battery Swap: A Signature Feature Under Review

One of NIO's most distinctive propositions — its proprietary battery-swap technology — remains under evaluation for Singapore. The system allows a depleted battery to be exchanged for a fully charged unit in under three minutes at a dedicated swap station, bypassing conventional charging entirely.

Battery-swapping for passenger cars is not currently covered under Singapore's national EV charging standard, TR25. LTA has conducted separate pilot programmes for the technology in heavy commercial vehicles only. Both NIO and Wearnes are studying whether a swap station is viable locally, but no confirmation has been given.

For now, Firefly buyers in Singapore will rely on conventional charging. The car supports the TR25-compliant AC and DC charger network that now covers the majority of HDB carparks and key public locations across the island.

Arriving at the Right Moment

NIO's entry comes as Singapore's EV market reaches a historic inflection point: electric vehicles accounted for 55% of all new car registrations in January 2026, led by BYD at 28.2% market share. The Firefly's LFP battery chemistry — which offers superior cycle life and a lower fire risk compared to NMC alternatives — aligns with growing buyer awareness of battery technology differences in Singapore's tropical climate.

The brand is positioning itself above mainstream Chinese EV offerings but below the premium German segment. With Wearnes' established service infrastructure and the NIO Space's experiential retail model, the brand's opening move appears focused on long-term credibility rather than aggressive volume.

No specific pricing has been announced at time of writing. Prospective buyers can visit the NIO Space at 28 Leng Kee Road or inquire through Wearnes Automotive.
