Singapore is set to get a major boost to its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, with the government committing to install at least one fast-charging hub in every Housing and Development Board (HDB) town by the end of 2027. The announcement was made by Senior Minister of State for Transport Sun Xueling during the Committee of Supply debate on 4 March 2026.
Why it matters to you: If you live in an HDB flat and have been hesitant about going electric due to charging concerns, this is the news you've been waiting for. The government is putting its money where its mouth is, and the timeline is concrete.
What's Being Built
Each new hub will be equipped with a minimum of six fast-chargers, each capable of a 50kW output. To put that in perspective, a typical home charger runs at 7-11kW. A 50kW charger can add roughly 200-250km of range in under an hour for most modern EVs. The LTA has also flagged that it is exploring "ultra-fast" chargers that could deliver hundreds of kilometres of range in under ten minutes.
The rollout will add approximately 20 new hubs to the 21 already in operation islandwide. The first batch of hubs has already been identified:
- Sengkang: Near Compass One shopping mall
- MacPherson: Near MacPherson Market
- Tengah: At Plantation Plaza (Singapore's newest eco-town)
Following this initial deployment, the next towns in line are Bedok, Choa Chu Kang, and Clementi.
The Bigger Picture
This announcement is a direct response to parliamentary pressure. Just last week, MPs raised concerns that Singapore had missed its earlier targets for EV charging infrastructure at HDB carparks. The government has now responded with a clear, town-by-town commitment.
The timing is no coincidence. In January 2026, a record 55% of all new car registrations were electric vehicles — a milestone that signals EVs are no longer a niche choice. As of end-January, Singapore has over 29,000 charging points, with around 12,000 publicly accessible. The new hubs will add meaningfully to the publicly accessible fast-charging pool.
Our Take
The shift from slow AC chargers to 50kW DC fast-chargers at HDB town centres is a significant quality-of-life upgrade for EV owners. For residents without private parking, this means the ability to top up quickly during a grocery run or a meal, rather than waiting overnight. The government's explicit commitment to every HDB town — not just a few pilot locations — suggests this is a policy priority, not just a trial.
