BYD Dominates January 2026 Car Sales as Singapore's EV Charging Network Hits 28,000 Points

BYD has emerged as the leading car brand in Singapore for January 2026, signalling a significant shift in the local automotive market towards electric vehicles (EVs). The manufacturer recorded 1,201 new car registrations last month, capturing 28.2 per cent of the market—surpassing the combined total of its two closest competitors. Toyota secured second place with 671 units, representing 15.7 per cent, while Tesla maintained a strong presence in third place with 413 units, or 9.7 per cent of the market. This robust start to the year builds on BYD’s impressive performance throughout 2025, when it led annual sales with 11,184 units and a 21.2 per cent market share.

Expansion of EV Charging Infrastructure

The surge in EV sales is closely linked to the rapid growth of Singapore’s charging infrastructure. The national network has nearly doubled within the past year, expanding from 15,300 charging points in late 2024 to approximately 28,000 today. Of these, around 12,000 chargers are publicly accessible, strategically located in Housing and Development Board (HDB) carparks and suburban shopping malls. This expansion supports the government’s ambitious target of 60,000 charging points by 2030, addressing a critical barrier to EV adoption by alleviating concerns over vehicle range and charging availability.

Growing Consumer Acceptance and Market Maturity

BYD’s ascendancy reflects more than just effective marketing; it indicates a maturing EV market where affordability, features and reliability are key factors. The brand has successfully transitioned from a niche newcomer to a mainstream contender, demonstrating that Singaporean consumers are increasingly willing to embrace electric vehicles as practical alternatives to traditional internal combustion engine cars.

The parallel development of the charging network plays an equally vital role. By significantly increasing the number and accessibility of public chargers—especially in residential and community hubs—Singapore is directly addressing the ‘range anxiety’ that has historically deterred potential EV buyers. This enhanced infrastructure not only supports current EV owners but also lays a solid foundation for future adoption as more drivers consider making the switch.

Together, these trends suggest that Singapore is progressing steadily towards a comprehensive electric vehicle ecosystem. As charging becomes more convenient and EV options continue to expand, electric vehicles are poised to become the default choice on local roads, aligning with the nation’s sustainability goals and contributing to improved urban living for all.
